MDCB investigates BCL mine accident

MDCB, a company duly registered in Botswana and wholly owned by Botswana Government to effectively manage and optimise the shareholder’s value Mineral investment portfolio in the mining industry is saddened to learn of a multiple fatality incident at one of BCL shafts. This incident has occurred at a time when BCL is undergoing serious strain due to depressed metal prices which have affected all base metals producers across the World. While we are fully aware of the intensity of mining operations and the inherent risk, the health and safety of all the employees is paramount. We note that BCL has a competent management team to lead the operation but it is important that we fully understand the issues that led to this incident and that appropriate action is taken.

MDCB, therefore, as mandated by Botswana Government, will take the lead and Support the Minister of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources, in implementing an external and independent specialist investigation of the incident at South East Extension, inclusive of a formal route cause analysis and recommendations to prevent similar occurrences at all the shafts. We announce that this investigation will be undertaken and managed by RSV Consulting Engineers who are specialists in Shaft design, construction, operations, and the associated infrastructure. RSV is a global leader in this field and has conducted similar investigations at other operations around the world. We have met the Department of Mines inspectorate at BCL and have confirmed our 100% support of their independent and mandatory investigation. I believe the BCL team has competently and adequately assisted the families of the deceased and will continue to do so going forward.

BCL is managing all the early learnings and the required precautionary review of all its shafts on the mining complex, with immediate effect. Most importantly, MDCB pledges its support to the BCL Management and will assist them to manage the current situation. Mining production operations at the affected shaft have been discontinued until investigations are concluded and the Department of Mines have given permission for mining to resume.
