DITSHWANELO on Trump

The Botswana Centre for Human Rights welcomes the recent decision by the Botswana Government, to express its deep displeasure at the extremely offensive and racist comments made President Donald Trump, about African countries. We also welcome the 13 January 2018 press statement by African Civil Society under the auspices of the Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOC) of the African Union.  It reiterated that in ‘’Africa we highly respect elders and the language the elders use should be respectful … (and asked that) ‘’… the US President seriously considers withdrawing this statement and issue a public apology’’. The Government of Botswana has in the past condemned socially and politically destructive action including within our SADC region by calling upon the former President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe to respect democracy and the wishes of the people of Zimbabwe. DITSHWANELO commends the Government of Botswana on it efforts and looks forward to continued principle-based foreign policy based on the values of non-discrimination, non-racism and equality.
