Botswana National Front (BNF) is aware and concerned by the Chinese companies’ plans, perhaps at the behest of their Government, to financially bankroll the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) in the forthcoming 2019 general elections. We call upon the Communist Party of China, which is currently in Gaborone and its government to restrain from meddling and interfering with Botswana politics by sponsoring the BDP financially and through other resources. Batswana are already unhappy with the conduct of the Chinese in the country where they voluntarily sponsor the BDP with millions of Pula and donate thousands of blankets and other resources to help BDP buy votes. We caution the Chinese government to stop these practices as they are undermining the sovereignty of this country. Recently President Mokgweetsi Masisi went to China and secured billions of pula of loans, whose conditions and payment terms remain a state and BDP secret. We are aware how desperate the BDP wants to win the 2019 general elections at all costs. The recent BDP presidential elections are a testimony of how the ruling party can go all dirty to win elections. The handling of Dr Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi versus President Masisi contest should send shock waves to any true democrat and peace loving citizen. Venson-Moitoi was almost classified a national security threat for challenging Masisi for presidency. With such a scary scenario on a party member, it will not be surprising for the BDP to unleash more undemocratic, ruthless and evil strategies on the opposition, including enlisting foreign countries like China to bankroll its campaign. As opposition we have relentlessly asked for electoral reforms, among them the state funding of political parties. BDP has vehemently refused, obviously because they enjoy state resources, and funding from China. State funding of political parties will enhance transparency in the way our parties conduct themselves lest they mortgage our country to aliens. While we support bilateral relations, we are totally against interference in national elections by foreign governments where they hide behind public projects. We therefore call upon the Chinese Communist Party of China to stop bankrolling the BDP. We further caution China that even if it continues with its funding tactics, the BDP will still dismally lose the 2019 general elections as it has failed Batswana in several fronts, including unprecedented large scale corruption.
