Sechaba Foundation donates pads to schools

I have taken the initiative through my philanthropic organization “Sechaba Foundation “ to donate sanitary pads in schools in Gaborone Bonnington South . I humbly urge my fellow citizens to spread this initiative to the rest of the country in all schools in compatriotic servanthood. We have a societal role to help girls , build communities and the nation .This is a necessary , important and moral undertaking because for girls in schools , their periods represent a time of embarrassment, fear and shame . Their inability and unwillingness to attend school during this time cause a huge damage to their education and future . I will further be donating mattresses to the indicated schools for utilization in instances where there are students who will not be feeling well and in need to be rested for assistance. There is compelling evidence that the experience of being unable to access sanitary pads can affect a child’s ability to reach their potential. As a nation we have a mammoth task before us to fight and totally eliminate period poverty.

As I have indicated before, my interaction with Guidance & Counseling teachers , parents have identified that there is serious period poverty in our communities, for there is the lack of access to sanitary products, menstrual hygiene education, waste management, toilets, hand washing facilities.

The assistance with sanitary pads is meant to support the girl child as it has been identified that ; There are instances where some students miss school during their menstrual periods because they are unable to afford sanitary protection. When they miss school , obviously that affects their educational progress . When their education is affected, a future is destroyed. A health challenge is posed unto them in the absence of sanitary pads.

As a nation let us push with seriousness and devotion the movement towards provision of free sanitary pads in schools. We got to help end period poverty and tackle the stigma and shame connected to periods. It is really horrifying that in well resourced Country , large amounts of funds continue to be lost in corruption , and then have occurrence of failure to provide important welfare services such as sanitary pads. Clearly this demonstrate that we are an immoral , neglect nation .
