The UDC has proven itself to be consistently a problematic form of political representation. Truth is being constructed and facts are being chosen to render cruelty at other founder partners. The darkest and primitive instincts of superstition, bigotry, hatreds hold sway of the UDC. Pessimism of the intelligence than optimism of the will drives the coalition agenda and as such the UDC resembles, in its effect, the paradox of the desire for and the suspicion of political mastery. Objectivity has been replaced with indecisiveness, partisanship as well as overt politics.
The complexity of serious clashing discourses in the UDC needs to be seen as juxtaposition of voodoo politics and solipsistic behaviour. The difficulties, the fundamental paradoxes, and contradictory impulse of UDC rest with its political genre. The problem seems to reside in its manner, in the self-consciousness of its ideology, the lack of and pretense of transparency, and the calling into question of the factual grounding of its formation. The deployment of the UDC hybridizing mix of political ideas has caused it to be mutually contradictory and hence its characteristic is un-masterable. Its politics is not told within a context that is historical, social, political, as well as inter-relational.
The UDC is a party that is devoid of transparency and common-sense naturalness. The problems are not tackled with a view to solving them but with a view to gaining favourable headlines. The primary process is actually encouraged by the party bosses, who have demonstrated beyond doubt to be poor problem-solvers. They examine evidence not to obtain a measure of the truth of a situation, but to select such parts of it as can be presented in the most favorable manner to meet the short-term needs of their partisanship. They have taken the risk of doing violence to the coalition by plotting and rendering a strong terror on its founder partner, BMD. With the formation of AP as a splinter and the expulsion of BMD, the UDC has situated itself at the interaction of severe disregard.
The problematizing fact of UDC is that even the history of mass politics and its meaning has been silenced, replaced, masked and perverted with political demagoguery hence resulted in moving UDC into a state of crisis in representation because it presents politics as a privatized form of experience championed by a few “charismatic” elites. There is no communicational bond between the leadership and supporters of UDC. The UDC does not have members with rights and responsibilities per - se in the coalition structure. Its practice is simply replacing representation with the idea of master-puppet picking leadership. This is not a party built around active members and policy platforms; it is a shifting coalition of entrepreneurial candidate campaign. This has progressively diminished the influence of the patronage machines of the contracting parties. The membership is not organized into active politics that engage in regular meetings for education, debate, decisions, and actions, instead the members have remained an atomized mass of passive party followers.
This is a structure that yields representation and control by party insiders who have no ongoing accountability to rank-and-file party supporters. Its campaign committees have become monopolistic players in the candidate market as they are busy playing an ever-greater role as the election approach in the selection and management of candidates by applying patronage boss-controlled rituals. The coalition is burdened by a leadership which is conceited, too full of itself, drunk of false ego and cogito. Those charged with the presidency of UDC have usurped the coalition as ‘a treat’ to themselves, hence finding pleasure to manage it as a matter of fascination and envy. The BNF and BCP in their exploitation of the power bestowed upon them in the coalition, have made visible the concealed mechanism which have brought to the fore their fallacious politics of big-brother mentality. They act as party-bosses than people`s representatives. Because of their appetites and strings of political lust, the party-bosses have reduced UDC to the puppet status. Close friends are being paraded and imposed as potential candidates for UDC. Simply put, the UDC presidency failed to render the coalition coherent, continuos and unified.
In spite of all this spontaneous eruptions, it has to be stated in all honesty and earnest that the undoing of UDC has nothing to do with any extraneous force from outside but has everything to do with the immanence nature of its content. All the distractions taking place in the UDC is as a result of failure by coalition members to discard the spirit of skepticism about each other which always results into the negation of their determination – the will to oust BDP from state power. The individual members of UDC have failed to embrace each other as one universal formidable force but instead prefer to cling to their individual character, hence the endless bickering and disintegration. UDC has failed to be all genuine in its principle of unity. It has failed to allow itself to rise above the limits of individual interests of parties involved. Worse still is the fact that UDC members behave a lot like fans than conscious political activists. This has caused a distorting effect on the UDC.
In all honesty, UDC has since inception depicted its politics as representation of instant gratification and borrowed prestige. The status of the classical epic of UDC popularity and its dominant representation of opposition has been orchestrated on the narratives of manipulation and farce. Its olfactory density of political chronology is historically and socially founded on pretended representation and agenda. The demagoguery play by the UDC party bosses on the promise of social reforms against the new business elites as well as the old landed elites is a vocabulary that may yet come to haunt them, for their agenda is very surreptitious. The mere promise by the UDC leadership to magically transcend partisan politics and implement the best solutions from all parties in the coalition and its appeal that the mere act of voting for it would prompt a “revolution” that would somehow clear up such knotty problems as unemployment, health-care coverage, economic reform, and equitable distribution of wealth is delusional.
There is nothing real about the UDC and there never was – even before the existence of cracks and ruptures. Its nostalgia for authenticity and apocalyptic nihilism of BDP rule is fictional. The UDC is an abuse of convention that works to “pollute” and dent the image of alternative politics and it can best be described by Karl Marx`s major historical paradox metaphor;- “It is a party that shapes and undermines change, it demolishes as it builds.” This is a party which is prone to simultaneous accretion and erosion. Instead of progressing it will instead decay. UDC is a project founded on the fabrication and diversion of real politics. Its transitive art of politics is committed to a model of rupture. It fits to be termed as a reality obscuring drama. It is on this basis that RAP contemptuously rejects the unworthy UDC coalition route into account as it carries the possibility of the bourgeoisie recoiling. Our position of the UDC as RAP is, it is a fresh bourgeoisie eyeing the enormous economic potential which Botswana has, advancing to effect regime change for the benefit and enrichment of themselves and the national bourgeoisie compatriots, not Batswana. UDC is just a big-tent party which seeks to bedazzle ever new groups of voters. It has nothing to do with “freedom” and “democracy,” and everything to do with strengthening the status – quo and weakening its nemesis. Its premise of politics will always generate superficial truths, and fall short of being a genuine force to reckon with.
