This week Barclays Bank of Botswana launched a partnership with China UnionPay, which will allow UnionPay card holders to transact at Barclays Bank ATMs and Point of Sale devices across the country. Speaking at the partnership launch, Brighton Banda, Barclays Bank's Retail Director said, "We are providing one of the most competitive offers in the market’’. He welcomed the partnership, citing the flourishing relationship between Botswana and China as a catalyst for collaborative initiatives such as the launch of inclusive payment solutions. UnionPay card holders will now be able to transact from the bank's network of over 117 ATMs and selected Point of Sale machines through its merchants across the country. This payment solution will intern promote the development of remote e-commerce and financial inclusion for China UnionPay cardholders nationwide. “We are pleased to bring another innovation to our pool of products already available to our clients via this China UnionPay new generation of smart card mobile payment.  This is one of the various ways in which we gear our efforts towards shaping and influencing customer behaviour bringing our clients more convenience and value,” added Banda. China UnionPay is the leading bankcard association in the world and has over 5 billion cardholders globally and is the preferred payment brand for Chinese nationals. Given the significant population of Chinese nationals throughout Botswana, it is important to provide financial solutions that meet their needs. Ambassador of China to Botswana Zhao Yanbo, who launched the product, said  China UnionPay or UnionPay International is so far the largerst card issuer in China with over 5 billion cards issued internally. “This is a card of choice for many Chinese nationals and other countries in Asia. On average, it is estimated that at least one Chinese National owns one Unionpay International card,” said the ambassador. Yanbo said it is therefore very commendable that Barclays Bank, one of Africa’s leading banks, has seen the need to partner with UPI to allow UPI  card holders to transact in Barclays Bank of Botswana ATMs and Point of Sale machines across different merchants and businessess.
