“Win a tractor” Comp boosts food security – Engen

Managing Director of listed petroleum company Engen Botswana Limited says the Win a tractor competition contributes to the improvement of food security in Botswana.

Speaking at the launch of the 2018 edition of the competition on Tuesday this week, Engen MD Chimweta Monga said in addition to improving food security, the process also contribute to income generation in Botswana and advancing the government policy of Citizen Economic Empowerment (CEE).

“The tractors are used to plough and plant the fields of those that win prizes and also to generate income through the hiring of the tractors to other farmers that do not have the means to plough their fields,” said Monga.

While competitors of Engen have been over the past few years giving away other stuff like motor vehicles, as Engen they decided to differentiate themselves from the rest by giving away prizes that would serve as a catalyst to the economic wellbeing of Botswana.

He said the competition has been accepted by both retailers and customers alike saying it not only provides excitement during mundane task of refueling ones motor vehicle but it also serves to increase traffic at Engen service stations across the country.

Engen started the competition six years ago and during this period it has given away a total of 22 tractors, 22 ploughs, 22 disk harrows and 22 planters and the number of each will increase by 26 by end of the 26 as Engen gives away a tractor each year together with these implements.

Monga said when Engen Botswana started the competition six years ago; principals in South Africa did not understand the how this was going to be an effective marketing and brand communication programme.

“Over the years, the benefits of this promotion have been established and our principals in South Africa take the lead in encouraging us to undertake the promotion annually,” he said.

Explaining the process that allows one to be entered into the draw, Monga said one is required to put up P250 or more when purchasing diesel, petrol or paraffin at any of the Engen service station countrywide.

Alternatively, one can spend P100 or more to purchase Engen lubricants or any other good at Engen Quick Shop or buy Engen lubricants at either Motovac or Agrishop which have partnered with Engen in this competition. Engen will also during the course of the promotion give away prizes worth of P3000.00.

Monga said they have designed the competition to be all inclusive as such purchases meeting the minimum threshold from all Engen retail outlets, Motovac and Agrishop outlets will be eligible to qualify for the draw.
