As it launches Open Bell Ceremonies

The Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Kenneth Matambo has praised Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE) under the leadership of Thapelo Tsheole for creating awareness about the stock market.

Matambo was launching the inaugural Opening Bell Ceremony at the BSE offices in Gaborone on Friday. He praised Tsheole and his team for developing the stock market diligently and creating awareness about it.

He said the BSE, through initiatives such as open days and listing conferences has made a significant progress which has been reflected through a number of companies that come to the BSE to list.

Open days, which have been held throughout the country as well as the annual listings conference which were started when Tsheole assumed his current role at the BSE, have been credited for taking the stock market to the people.

The stock market currently has a total of 34 listed entities, 48 bonds and four Electronic Traded Funds (ETFs).

Since 2016 to date, a total of five companies have listed on the BSE, including Botswana Telecommunications Corporation Limited (BTC) whose initial Public Offering (IPO) was accompanied by so much hype.

Tsheole said of recent they have seen Batswana coming to the market to purchase shares, a demonstration that their initiatives are bearing fruit. He said the Opening Bell Ceremony is a historic ceremony and part of the initiatives to grow awareness about the capital markets.

The Opening Bell Ceremony is a globally-recognized event involving stock exchanges around the world. It serves as a platform to signify the beginning of trading at the start of each day
