As part of their on-going commitment towards cancer awareness Nando’s recently partnered with Team Chainring, a cycling club to sensitise the public about the disease. Team Chainring engaged on the Ride for Pink campaign riding from Maun to Gaborone and included teaching people about cancer on the way. The seven-day ride started on May 8 and ended on May 14, 2016. Ride for Pink is an idea borne from the need to increase cancer awareness across Botswana, especially in the peripheries through sharing critical statistical data and general information about the disease. The Ride also served to raise funds to be donated to Cancer Association of Botswana (CAB).
Nando’s supported the riders with meals from their restaurants on the route from Maun, Francistown, Mahalapye and Airport Junction in Gaborone. Team Chainring coordinator Leutlwetse Kgosidialwa said they saw the need to engage in the ride after realising that most Batswana knew little about cancer. Kgosidialwa said they are looking to organise another ride through the country to continue their campaign. Twelve riders took part. One of the riders said as they rode through they realised that more information needs to be given to Batswana regarding cancer. He said some do not know that there are different types of cancers with breast cancer being the only popular. He said Batswana know more about HIV/AIDS than cancer, hence the need to intensify the campaigns.
Nando’s Brand Manager Simiso Ncube said they are committed to curb the increase of lifestyle diseases like cancer and diabetes amongst Batswana through partnerships with relevant organisations. Ncube encouraged Batswana to lead a healthy lifestyle to prevent diseases. “We also encourage healthy lifestyles, with wise food choices. At Nando’s take pride in offering a fast casual dining experience with healthier meal options,” said Ncube.
These campaign efforts were also supported by the Ministry of Health and Cancer Association of Botswana.
