The 2017 Mascom Derby will be held at the Shashe Race Track on the 15th April 2017 from 8am. This event is the highlight of the Maun Easter Holidays calendar with dignitaries and tourists coming in from different countries around the world to join in the excitement and experience Maun cuisine, music, cultural fashion extravaganza and the horse race competition. This year the derby will showcase eighty eight (88) horses registered from Botswana and Lesotho who will be racing at different categories comprising of four Tswana breed and seven Thorough breed races. The Ministry of Youth Empowerment, sport and culture development will sponsor 4 Races as the previous year. Among other dignitaries, the event will be graced by the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development Thapelo Olopeng and other Ministers.
The Fashion Show – “White Sands”
After a successful event in Maun, Mascom Derby Fashion Show 2016 proved that there is Talent in Northern part of Botswana and Mascom saw it fit to provide a platform for up and coming designers during the biggest horse racing event in Botswana. The 2017 Fashion show will be held on the 14th April 2016 at Cresta Riley’s, 7pm. The show will feature six designers with amazing talents who will showcase 8-10 garments each. The theme of the fashion show being ‘WHITE SANDS’, inspired by the love of Exotic destinations in Botswana and the white sands of Maun under the lazy summer sun. The fashion show promises to showcase Bohemian wear, floral prints and huge straw. The models will strictly be from Maun to promote local models in the area.
Mascom Corporate Social Responsibility
As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, Mascom will donate P50 000.00 to Love Botswana Outreach Mission Centre in Maun on the 14th April 2017. The media is invited to join us at the Love Botswana Outreach Mission on the 14th April, 2017 from 4pm where we will hand over the donation and later on Mascom will host stakeholders for a Preview Fashion Show at Cresta Rileys Hotel from 7:00pm. The media is invited to both events.
About the Derby
The Mascom Derby has been in existence since 2006, this year marks 11 years since Mascom has been supporting the Derby. While we celebrate 11 years of this great horse fortitude, the 2017 Mascom Derby promises an extraordinary show of fashion and cultural diversity. In its maiden years, the race was held between Gaborone and Maun, until finally relocating to Botswana’s cosmopolitan tourism capital, beautiful Maun.
