Billy Obonye: Budding actor

One of the rising stars in the local film industry, Billy Obonye, is enjoying every minute as a leading actor in local drama – Ntwakgolo. In fact he is a hit with the audience. With the next season of Ntwakgolo coming soon he is promising his legion of fans fireworks. His character has now evolved to that of a drug lord. To Obonye, acting has always been his passion from a very young age. His drama teacher in junior school encouraged him after realising his potential. Thereafter he started taking part in drama competitions but there were no fruits in that. His aunt encouraged him to go back to school. He joined Selibe-Phikwe Theatre which focused on healthy lifestyle and encouraging the youth to take part in competitions. In 2013 he auditioned for Ntwakgolo and was picked for the role of Mr Lemphorwana who was a doctor. In 2014, he came to work full time at Dee Zone Productions as an actor and key grip. He then got a role to act as an abuser who maltreated his woman in Pelokgale. “I was acting with Berry Heart by then and the drama was based on true stories as recorded by the Women Shelter,” he said. He also features in the recently launched Seretse Khama movie – A United Kingdom.

He said the new Ntwakgolo will be very interesting because it is set in Gaborone. Obonye said having started as a con artist in Ntwakgolo, the new season will captivate viewers for its great quality and the new faces on it. He didn’t want to divulge a lot about the role, but said great characters like Razor and Bullet will be seen while Mr T, Bro Biza and Girly who will definitely captivate. “This will be a season like no other, just wait for it and enjoy,” he said. The multi-talented actor is also into casting because he started acting when he was young and understands it better. He can direct, shoot and do cinematography, having learnt all on set because he did not go to school himself. He encouraged those who have passion in what he does to push harder and do that, because it is his passion that got him where he is and not any qualification. He is grateful because he is growing each and every day of his profession. He said he is happy that they are paving way for upcoming performers, who stand a chance of being paid better.
