AN AFFAIR WITH MUSIC: DJ Lexy J engages Dr Rose Mokubung

DR MOKUBUNG: I am Dr Rose Seanokeng Mokubung from Phalla-Road. I was born in Lobatse but grew up ko Phikzana – Selebi-Phikwe. I am a 47-year-old dentist practising in Gaborone.

DJ LEXY J: I’d like to know your relationship with music, when did the love begin? How far back can you remember?

DR MOKUBUNG: I have loved music for as far back as my childhood. My father, who loved Mahotella Queens music, regularly sang the song ‘Rosy My Girl’ to me. I suppose that inspired the name and as well as my love for music. Although growing up I didn’t listen to Mahotella Queens as much, there were other artists I appreciated more. I’m yet to meet a person who doesn’t love music.

DJ LEXY J: What kind of music do you love and how often do you indulge yourself?

DR MOKUBUNG: I greatly enjoy gospel music. I indulge myself in worship songs almost every morning driving to work. I am not a gifted singer but that never stops me from singing along with my favourite songs on my way to and from work, especially when I’m alone in the car. It is food for my soul.

DJ LEXY J: How has music influenced your life over the years?

DR MOKUBUNG:  Music indeed transcends generations. Over the years music has seen me through rough patches, celebrations and quiet moments. Different songs cater for different moods.

DJ LEXY J: Does the music you listen to now differ from what you listened to growing up?

DR MOKUBUNG: Growing up I listened to different genres. From country music (probably as a result of watching too many cowboy movies), R&B, and a bit of Rock music. Now I indulge in gospel music. It revitalises and energises me.

DJ LEXY J: Can you think of any particular music/song that you associate a memory, mood, or place with?

DR MOKUBUNG: I was introduced to Bob Marley’s music by a good friend when I was still a University of Botswana student. Whenever I hear the music I am reminded of my varsity days.

DJ Lexy J: What is your all-time favourite song(s)?

DR MOKUBUNG: Joe Cocker –You are so Beautiful; Rod Steward – Maggie May; and Tina Turner – Simply the Best

DJ LEXY J: Who is your all-time favourite Artist, and why?

DR MOKUBUNG: Rod Steward is the best! He is a good singer but appears to not take life too seriously. He has a husky voice and a very good sense of humour. He has interesting dance moves too.

DJ LEXY J: What’s on your playlist and how do you choose the music that goes onto it?

DR MOKUBUNG: Lexy, I now listen to simply gospel music. Todd Dulaney (Consuming Fire, Victory), funny man Tye Tribbett (He Tuned It), Vashawn Mitchell, Bethel (No longer Slaves), Shirley Caesar and so forth. I play the music that I really enjoy over and over for a certain period until I can’t take it anymore.

DJ LEXY J: So long, have yourself a super duper day!!

DR MOKUBUNG: Thank you for taking me down memory lane, oh, you helped me remember the “good” old days. Have a blessed day.
