As it comes to an end, some sigh with relief that the year will be finally coming to an end, while others look back and smile because of all the good things that have happened to them. It has been a hectic year with its ups and downs. Some of the highlights included Vee’s wedding, which became one of the weddings of the year as Botswana’s entertainment sensation wed his long time sweetheart Kagiso Sento in a pilot suit.
On the international scene, among others, Lupita Nyong’o grabbed world attention for her stunning performance in the movie, ‘12 years a slave’ which made her an instant A class celebrity.
This year also saw other local artists brewing good music, which proved that they were going somewhere in terms of quality, for example the new RnB sensation Spiza and the pint sized diva Amantle.
Poet and gender activist, Berry Heart has also had an incredible year as she globetrotted entertaining the world and marketing Botswana culture through her poetry. She has also set tongues wagging over her sexy dressing.
One of the Botswana’s ever shining international stars, Zeus also continued to shine this year where he scooped many awards among them the Botswana National Youth committee (BNYC) award and even a channel O award. His collaboration with talented artist, Samantha Mogwe resulted in a hit maker. There is also the Kast and Anafiki collaboration which has has put a shine on the ‘Mpolelle re babedi’ song.
One of Botswana’s notable successes was the listing of Okavango Delta among the World Heritage Sites. The decision was made by the World Heritage Committee sitting in Doha, making the site the 1000 to be listed in the world.
This year also saw the local arts industry being boasted, in which a lot of exhibitions were made at Thapong Arts, the Ministry of Youth Sport and Culture, and the opening of the museum at the ministry building among others.
Botswana Music Union (BOMU) held their annual awards which attracted vitrol from critics. However BOMU has maintained that it did a great job in hosting the awards. Among winners of the night was the young Feine who got award for best new comer, Jazz lady Nono Siile going away with best jazz artist and female of the year, while the biggest winner was DJ Oats who scooped more than two awards. But no other event could have outshined the Limkokwing Glitz and Glamour event, which indeed had all the factors of an A class event.
In the international scene one thing that can never be forgotten is the wedding of Kanye West to reality star Kim Kardashian, which was dubbed the wedding of the year. And oh yeah, Nicki Minaj flaunted her ass on the internet, while Kim Kardashian also broke the internet with her ass that held a wine glass.
