Maun what’s the hype

When it comes to variety of eating out options Maun has got plenty. Unlike in most Botswana towns where a great percentage of eateries are franchises in Maun there are more original, owner managed and run eateries. The eateries cater for different taste buds, have different ambiences and architectural designs. One place that caught my eyes is Miguel’s Taco Shack. The name on its own is quite quirky considering that it does look like a colourful shack from the main road and the name give away the fact that it should be a Mexican joint as Botswana is not a taco country. Miguel Taco Shark is located next to the craft market in the new mall. You cannot miss it as it is bright yellow is the wall is adorned with drawings of cactuses trees, jalapeños and sombrero hat. It looks like a tuck-shop/semausu from the road and it is in the front yard of a residential place which is Botswana semausu kind of setup. I decided to check out this colourful joint and see if they indeed bring Mexico feel to Maun. I was greeted by very jolly gentleman who offered me a sit and a glass of water. I was impressed by the gesture as he did not wait for me to ask for water but considered that with the temperature of over 37 degrees on the day I might just need to hydrate. The owner came over to our table at some point to find out if we were okay. I got to find out the place is named after him. He sat with us for a few minutes for a chat and left us to enjoy our meal and the ambience. The beauty about owner managed eateries is that the owners interact with their clients and if you have feedback it can be immediate. The place has a holiday vibe kind of feel going on, they play Mexican music and boundaries are not made out of mortar but thin local bamboo, giving it a relaxed and cool feel. One other thing that I thought was cool was a wall that had hand written messages from their clients as well as memes about all things Mexican. They serve authentic Mexican food; Tacos, quesadillas, freshly made tortillas, enchilada, and Burritos. I would recommend the quesadillas for the not so hungry. It is the best I have ever tasted in Botswana, very crispy and busting with flavours. When in Maun and feeling like some Mexican vibe Miguel Taco Shack is the place to be.
