When it comes to platforms for artists in Botswana we can agree that there aren't enough. The creative industry is very small compared to other sectors in the country. We are yet to create a sustainable trade and we are far from contributing to Botswana's greater economy. The bright side of things is that we have so much freedom to always start something, we have the ability to experiment and we have the opportunity to expand every day. The fashion Meet Up is an example of a budding platform foundered by Mandy Makhumalo, a law student at the University of Botswana. The fashion Meet Up is an intimate networking event for photographers, fashion designers, stylists, makeup artists and bloggers. Artists have the time to learn about their creative rights in Botswana as well as get a moment to collaborate with other artists. The event is held once a year and this year it took place at the Thapong Visual Arts Centre in village. Rorisang Lu had the honour of displaying some of the exclusive pieces from the summer collection. Creatives may have a small space in Botswana, but it doesn't mean they have no place. If we continue to search and move forward like The Fashion Meet Up we will end up with an industry bigger than that of the diamonds.
