'The Grace Effect' is the second project the Rorisang Lu brand decided to work with using another model from the first model workshop. Ludo Tamuhla is a 23-year-old aspiring model and also the best choice for portraying Grace Jones through this visual project. Grace Jones is a Jamaican singer, songwriter, supermodel, record producer and actress. She influenced the cross-dressing movement of the 1980s. Grace Jones had an unusual, androgynous, bold and dark-skinned appearance. She is what we see as reject beauty in today's society and perceptions. Her unique look is what inspired the brand to dedicate this project to, as the Rorisang Lu brand celebrates all that not mediocre and all that is original. In Botswana we do not have a lot of diverse images of ourselves, another reason why the brand decided to take images and style in a way we as Batswana rarely see. As a brand we try avoid anything that seems typical, from design to make-up to hair and styling. A lot of current successful fashion brands here in Botswana offer just a few creative styles, always using the same fabrics such as tulle, lace and synthetic satin. These brands use very similar patterns such as high waist a-line dresses that fall just below the knee and it is always for the same occasion like weddings, bridal showers and events.
As a brand it is important to show variety and portray diversity. Rorisang Lu loves to express itself through patterns and designs. Certain styles and aesthetics help tell a story visually. It harmonizes the image along with the traits and qualities of the brand. Ludo Tamuhla was chosen for this story as she demonstrated fearlessness and general openness to experimenting with the Grace Jones character. She had easily transformed into this inspiring and iconic woman making it even easier to work with. The images came out to be phenomenal and powerful. How did you find out about Rorisang Lu?
Well...back in high school you told me about your dream to have your own clothing brand and you said you'd call it Rorisang Lu. Therefore I have had the privileged to see the realisation of your dream via social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.
What did you think about the brand?
I think the brand is fresh, authentic and original - incomparable brand.
How did you get involved with the brand?
On November 25th 2017, I attended the Rorisang Lu model workshop. By God's grace, I was selected as one of the brands ambassador and model. That's how the beautiful relationship started.
What distinguishes Rorisang Lu from other brands you have worked with?
This is the first time I have worked with a clothing brand. Rorisang Lu celebrates and embraces fresh new talent in the case of models. It's a brand that celebrates ones unique individuality
What do you think the Rorisang Lu brand represents in your words?
I think the brand aims to use bright colours, nature and different cultures to compliment women of different colour, shapes, sizes and ages across the board. It's a versatile brand.
Do you think working with Rorisang Lu can take you further than where you are now?
Definitely. Before I had desire to be a model, but the right opportunity had not yet presented itself. I strongly believe Rorisang Lu will teach me about the modelling industry, build my portfolio and expose me to local and ultimately international connections.
Were you able to express yourself when doing the shoot?
Yes. After I put the nerves aside, I was able to express as best as I could considering it was my very first professional shoot.
What advice do you give to beginner models when working with Rorisang Lu?
Be yourself, don't be afraid to explore your potential and be willing to learn.
