A Dressage Clinic was held recently in Ruretse, Gaborone. It took place at Herbie’s Haven Stables and Havenspride Stud and at Penndragon Equestrian Centre.
The visiting instructor was Andrea Harrison whose return ticket from Johannesburg, South Africa was sponsored by the Horse Society of Botswana.
The cost of a 40 minute lesson to the rider was P400.00. The schedule of lessons was organised entirely by Debra Freeman to the times that suited the riders.
This clinic was perfectly timed for Botswana’s dressage team that will be riding at the upcoming Inter Africa Cup Competition in Namibia over the second weekend of May.
Andrea Harrison has been instructing in the discipline of dressage in Botswana since 2013. She trained in Germany for six years. During this time she was competing for South Africa. She has Protea Colours, SAEA gold, silver and bronze badges. She also won her Provincial Gauteng Colours and she has been selected on a number of occasions to represent Gauteng. She is inspired by teaching dressage at all levels and to all ages and always hopes to help her clients reach their fullest potential. She uses a small intercom system speaking quietly from her own mouthpiece to a speaker attached to the rider’s ear. This is a very effective method of communicating with the rider. Andrea has her own stable yard in Glenferness, Kyalami, where she has 24 horses, mostly owned by clients whom she trains and teaches.
Andrea is a regular competitor at the big shows in South Africa. She is presently competing on eight horses at all levels. At Grand Prix level she is riding Manave 11, an Andalusian stallion that is owned by Ashleigh Bekker, Bodenhausen Zarak, in the Medium Tour, who is owned by Anna Nolte and her own horse, Principal’s Real Rob Roy, in the Small Tour. She rides five horses at Advanced and Medium level. We are very lucky to have a competitive rider of this calibre to teach us in Botswana.
Participants were thrilled by what they gained.
“Thanks so much to Andrea for yet another fantastic clinic. It was so good to learn new techniques to improve the movements of my horse. Andrea is always so encouraging,” one declared.
Yet another said: “Thank you Andrea, HSB, Penndragon, Herbie’s Haven and all the riders who participated in the clinic over the two days. Without each other it would not be possible to have this wonderful tuition. Due to health reasons I have not seen Andrea since November so I have particularly enjoyed my lessons and having a close pair of eyes scrutinise us before we travel to Namibia for the Inter Africa Cup”.
