The Winter Festival Show was held at Herbie’s Haven Stables and Havenspride Stud in Ruretse over the weekend.

The Dressage judge was Bridget O’Neill with her scribe being Aida Arbi.

The Show-Jumping Judge was Teresa Fitt while her time recorder was Camilla Joyner and Aida Arbi as scribe. The Course Designer and Course Builder was Bridget O’Neill was the course designer and builder.

The Entry fees were P130.00 per class which included the Official’s Levy of P20.00 and Ground Levy of P30.00.

Stabling was P80.00 for the duration of the show with bedding provided. Each Rider paid a Medical Levy of P50.00 to contribute to the charge from Rescue One Medical Services. Rescue One Medical Services were on standby with an ambulance, full life support unit and emergency medical kit.  

The show began at 8.00am on both mornings. On Saturday dressage tests were ridden until early afternoon. On Sunday the show-jumping classes ran through until late morning.

On Sunday morning show-jumping started at 8.00am with a competition in two phases followed by an Accumulator Class.

Bridget built two fantastic courses. The Competition in Two Phases had 14 jumps and 15 jumping efforts with seven changes of rein comprising of eight uprights, five parallels and one double combination.

Jump one, a green, white and orange parallel was approached through the start on the right rein, land right and around to jump two, a blue, black and white upright with a gate filler, land left and around to jump three, a black, green and white parallel with a plank filler, land left and around to jump four, a red, white and blue upright with Clover Botswana wings, land left and on to jump five,  a yellow, black, white and orange upright, land right and around to jump six, a blue, black, white and yellow parallel, land right and on a right curve to jump seven, a red, white and blue Clover Botswana double combination of a parallel and one stride to an upright, land left and around to jump eight, a red, green and white upright with a gate filler, straight on to jump nine, the black, yellow and white Murray and Roberts parallel, land right and around to jump ten, a black and white upright, land left and on a left curve to jump eleven, a red, orange, yellow and green upright, land right and around to jump twelve, a red, orange, yellow and green parallel, on to jump thirteen, a red, green and white upright with a gate filler and dog kennel wings, land left and turn back to jump fourteen, a red, black and white upright with a gate filler and through the finish.

The Accumulator had eight jumps, comprising of four uprights, two parallels, one triple bar and one “option” of uprights and three changes of rein.

Shannon O’Neill, now aged nineteen, leaves Botswana after this show to spend a year in Charter’s Towers, Queensland, Australia as a Teacher’s Aid. Shannon has been an active member of the Horse Society of Botswana all of her young life.
