The Big 4 Fashion Weeks

New York is one of the biggest fashion capitals in the world along with Paris, London and Milan also known as the 'Big 4'. New York Fashion Week is semi-annual which takes place in February and September or every year. For 7 to 9 days the city hosts major designers of the fashion industry to exhibit their best and latest works loyal customers, potential clients, celebrities and major buyers.

Eleanor Lambert Berkson known for American fashion and public relations industry created the New York fashion week in 1943. She also organised the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) in1962 and was a member till her death. The Organisation is a Non Profit trade association of over 450 American fashion and accessory designers.

The first fashion week was known as 'Press Week of New York' as it aided to divert attention from French fashion during World War II. It created a platform for American Designers to communicate better to fashion journalists as they were neglected because of the success of press week. Magazines like Vogue and other publications featured more American designers.

Events of the fashion week are held in various locations around New York, such as Skylight Monynina, Chelsea piers and showrooms. Most events are invitation only but for those who cannot attend, but are just as fashion obsessed can watch most of the shows live offered on YouTube and websites.

To show in fashion week can be a very costly expense especially for minor designers. It costs about $200,000 for a basic runway show. An average venue can range from $15.000 to $60 000. Styling can cost $8000 per day for the high-demand stylists, but you can get a low in demand stylist for $10,000 for the entire duration of the fashion week. Production and PR can range from $15,000 to $35,000. Hair and Makeup range from $5000 to $15000, but a lot of beauty companies sponsor. Models are highly underpaid or not paid at all as most of the payments are designer clothes, but big brands pay models from $200 t0 $500 a show. To live stream a show costs $12,000. A lot of these expenses vary per designer.

For Botswana to adopt the 'fashion week' organisation will take major funding it will be a great way to propel the fashion industry in Botswana. We would need to have select designers of various towns and regions throughout the country and the finalists to show throughout the 'Gaborone Fashion Week'. This way clients, boutique owners and other stores could make investments in up and coming designers.
