Perion: Lejebejebe hit maker

Perion dubbed the ‘New Prince in the City’is one of the most trending young artists in the country at the moment.

Born Onkemetse Casperion Goretetse, the young lad has the music world at his feet. The Lejebejebe hit maker has already collaborated with other local giants in ATI and Bouncy. He never gets into a place unnoticeable because of his sense of style.

He was born in Selibe-Phikwe and started composing songs at junior secondary school level and even taking part in music clubs.

“I actually started recording when I was in senior school – recording my first track when I was doing form four even though it was never released,” he said.

It was when he was doing form fivethat he recorded a song that changed his life, making him realise his massive talent. Thereafter a lot of people motivated him to take his love for music further.

He continued recording, but it was after he was discovered by Off Campus Events in 2016 that he actually released his first single called Shoshona.

“From there in 2017 I followed it with the single that everyone knows, which is Lejebejebe, and I did this with someone who was there by my side for a long time and that is Trigger Mayne. He produced the song,” he said.

Perion said when working on the album, which was slow and emotional, they wanted to come up with an African beat that everyone could jam to and it was a perfect song for that as it managed to achieve exactly that through its popularity.

He said the lyrics have nothing to do with what happened in his life, but were rather influenced by the perceptions of the society around him, where he wanted to address.

Each and every industry comes with its own challenges, and there is no doubt that when it comes to music, Botswana is still one of the countries that are trailing behind, and this sometimes takes a toll on the local talent even if they are very good at what they do.

“I faced a lot of challenges, and mostly financial challenges because all that goes into everything that we do takes moneyand I suffered such before I was signed,” he said.

He regards patience as one of the most important things, and has learnt that he has to believe in himself before people start believing in him. He has recently released his third single called Saulo which encourages men to leave relationships that do not make them happy.

His album is due out next year, and he is very excited about it. He wants to cement his stature among the leading lights of his genre. This is just the beginning as he intends to dominate local music for years to come.
