What started off as a passion of playing with chemicals from a very young age has transformed into a real life changing vocation for founder of Keren Happuch Fragrance.
A 33-year-old Kgomotso Sedimo chose to follow her vision and started operating her business Keren Happuch Fragrance despite challenges of raising capital.
Sedimo’s dedication and hard work recently paid off when she scoped awards in different expositions – the Youth Business Expo, the Women Expo and the Consumer Fair. She won the Best Youth in Manufacturing at the Youth Business Expo, another award at the Women Expo and the Best Woman in Manufacturing and The Ministers’ Choice for Best Woman in Business at the Consumer Fair.
The Serowe-born native said when she applied for funding from the Ministry of Youth to start her perfumery business her application was rejected on numerous occasions.
It was only this year that it finally got the approval. Before getting the funds she had to ditch her position as a lecturer at the Institute of Health Sciences in Lobatse.
“I had no financing and had to tutor Mathematics and Sciences around Serowe as a way of raising the capital for the business,” she said.
‘I tutored for a while until I could afford to rent out a small office, after my application got approved I combined the funds with my savings from the tutorials to finally start Keren Happuch. It has been a journey marred with so much pain, tears and disappointment but I chose to persevere anyway,” she said.
A lot did not go well for Sedimo so much that she ended up suffering from severe depression that nearly led to suicide. But she soldiered on in the midst of severe adversity and now stands tall as a living example of one who could not allow circumstances, mistakes and failure to hold her hostage.
