Graded qualifying round

A Course Building and Show-Jumping Seminar and Graded Qualifying Round Show took place at Penndragon Equestrian Centre, Ruretse last weekend.

All members of the Horse Society of Botswana were invited to attend the seminars and compete in the show-jumping competition. Sean Irish of Nashua Botswana sponsored the return air flights from Johannesburg for the Course Builder and the Show-Jumping Judge.

The Course Builder was Eric Bianchi. The Bianchi family has been instrumental and a driving force at the core of the development of equestrian sport in Botswana and in the founding and subsequent growth of the Horse Society of Botswana.  

Eric is the son of Con and Joy Bianchi who came to live in Botswana in 1974. They purchased Gaborone Stables at Bonnington Farm which, in time, moved out to Notwane. Eric is an FEI Level 1 Course Builder, an FEI Level 2 Coach and a South African National Course Designer. On Saturday morning, Eric presented a detailed and informative seminar on all aspects of Course Building and at the end of the afternoon designed and built the course for Sunday’s competition.  On Saturday afternoon, Gill Shaw presented a detailed and informative seminar on all aspects of being a Show-Jumping Judge. At 6.00pm Belinda had organised a social event which included a light meal and was served for all who wished to stay and ask more questions and spend more time with Eric and Gill. A contribution to Penndragon Equestrian Centre of BWP150.00 per person for the seminar was paid.  The whole day was very well attended despite the afternoon temperature which soared to thirty-six degrees. Eric was accommodated by Sean and Belinda and Gill was accommodated by Mike and Camilla Joyner.

On Sunday the weather changed and was overcast, cool and even produced some rain for the show-jumping competition. The course was open for walking at 8.00am and the competition stared at 8.30am. The Judge was Gill Shaw. Her Time Recorder was Camilla Joyner and their Scribe was Maya Bergh. The arena Steward was Sandy Davies.  

The entry fees were P100.00 per class which included the Officials Levy of P30.00 and the Grounds Levy of P20.00. Owners and riders had to hold HSB membership and all horses/ponies entered be registered with HSB.

Eric built two awesome flowing courses for the show in the 44M X 73M arena.  The first course had ten jumps and eleven jumping efforts with two changes of rein comprising of five uprights, four parallels and one double combination. Jump one, a red, black and white parallel with red wings was approached through the start on the right rein, land right and on a right curve to jump two, the Botswana flag, a blue, black and white upright with Penndragon Equestrian Centre wings, land right and on a right curve to jump three, an orange and white parallel with orange segment wings, land right and around to jump four a blue, red and white upright with white trellis wings, straight on in five strides to jump five, a mauve, white, yellow and pink parallel with pink and mauve butterfly wings, land left and around to jump six, a black, yellow and white upright, straight on in five strides to jump seven, a green, red and white parallel, land right and around to jump eight, a green, orange, white and black upright with green wall wings, land right and on a right curve to jump nine, the white, red and blue Nashua Botswana double combination of a parallel and one stride to an upright, land right and around to jump ten, a blue, red and white upright with white trellis wings (also jump four but jumped in the opposite direction) and through the finish. This course was jumped at 0.60cms, 0.70cms and 0.80cms. The course was then changed for 0.90cms, 1.00M and the second class starting with 0.60cms.

The second course had ten jumps and eleven jumping efforts with three changes of rein comprising of five uprights, four parallels and one double combination. Jump one, the Botswana Flag, blue, black and white upright was approached through the start on the right rein, land right and turn back to jump two, a mauve, white, yellow and pink parallel with pink and mauve butterfly wings, land left and around to jump three, a black, yellow and white upright with a white plank filler, straight on in five strides to jump four, a green, red and white parallel, land right and around to jump five, a green, orange, white and black upright with green wall wings, land right and on a right curve to jump six, the white, red and blue Nashua Botswana double combination of a parallel and one stride to an upright, land right and around to jump seven, a blue, red and white upright with white trellis wings, land left and on a left curve to jump eight, an orange and white parallel with orange segment wings, land left and on a left curve to jump nine, the Botswana Flag upright (also jump one but jumped in the opposite direction), land left and on a left curve to jump ten,  a red, black and white parallel with red wings and through the finish. The jump off course was jumps one to six.
