Local Jazz maestro Socca Moruakgomo will in March tour Germany as his first step of touring the greater Europe and then North America to promote his music and the country at large.
Moruakgomo will be accompanied by Puna Gabasiane in the Germany. This, he says, is an exciting moment as it will be first time ever for him to take a local band to perform alongside him overseas. He said he once used the Caribbean Musicians to perform his ‘Ke merwalela’ hit.
Quizzed on the idea behind his one month tour Moruakgomo said: “My Germany tour is meant to promote my music and represent the nation at large with the aim of fostering cultural exchange. It will also give an opportunity to attract music promoters to come to Botswana and see how we can work together in future including other local musicians”.
He will thereafter start work on his next album following the 2016 release of Destiny. His albums are often released in an interval of 5-7 years’ time frame.
The veteran musician decried lack of support for local music by Batswana, saying he is more acclaimed for international-based performances as compared to home because the international community appreciates his music more.
His advice to the young musicians is that they should come into the music industry without the mind-set of chasing fame but to work hard. He noted with concern that there is no longer good working relations between upcoming artists and well already established ones, something which he said will harm the industry.
Prior to the tour, Moruakgomo and Gabasiane will engage in four day farewell concerts in Gaborone at Wagga Gardens on December 28, Natefo Conference Centre in Mochudi on December 29th , Mahalapye Cresta and Botsalo Cresta in Palapye on December 30th and 31st respectively.
