A new African plant based protein burger has been launched in Botswana courtesy of Go Fresh! The company signed a distribution agreement with Infinite Foods; the African plant based Protein Company, to distribute leading plant-based protein products in Botswana.
The game-changing Beyond Burger and Nature and Moi Cheese were launched and tasted for the first time in Gaborone at Portuguese Caravela restaurant in Gaborone.
Key among notable dignitaries that graced the launch was the Minister of Health Dr Alfred Madigele, and outgoing Managing Director of Barclays Bank Botswana Reinette van der Merwe.
Phenyo Moroka, Director of Infinite Foods, said the plant dominated rich protein Beyond Burger will boost the health of those that have it.
“We love our beef in Botswana, but we know that eating too much meat has been linked to high cholesterol, cancer and heart disease. We need to find ways to eat less meat. These are the words most of us don’t want to hear but imagine if you could enjoy all the things you love about eating meat, get all the protein, nutrients and delicious taste, and not worry about the health worries linked to eating too much meat?” he said.
Moroka said plans are afoot to roll out a serious promotion of the product and even launch it more beyond the borders of Gaborone.
A Beyond Burger patty has 20g of protein, more than a beef burger, with less saturated fat and no cholesterol. It also uses 99% less water than a traditional 113-gram beef burger, 93% less land and produces 90% fewer greenhouse gases, according to a joint study by Beyond Meat and a major US university.
Since its debut in 2016, more than 50 million Beyond Burgers have been sold globally. The Beyond Burger® is so authentic tasting it is positioned in the meat section of the grocery stores in the United States and abroad
Moreover, Infinite Foods will be initially launching The Beyond Burger in restaurants and foodservice outlets, adding to Beyond Meat’s current distribution in more than 12,000 restaurants including Carl’s Jr., TGI Fridays, BurgerFi, Bareburger and A&W Canada.
