Nando’s Botswana hosted the 2019 finals of the annual Grillers’ Challenge on Sunday, 16 June. Approximately a year ago, in 2018, the Nando’s International Master Griller, Goabaone Thipe emerged as the flaming winner and months later went on to represent Botswana, and win the Nando’s International Grillers’ Challenge in Sydney, Australia.

This year media personalities, valued customers and many from the Nando’s family witnessed the rise of a new Champion, Kabelo Modewa. Hailing from the Nando’s Maun store, Modewa began his career on the grill in 2016, and is described as an “ambitious, focused man who is always ready to go above and beyond to serve excellence”. Following the announcement of the winner at the finals held in Nando’s Mogoditshane, reigning champion and one of this year’s judges, Goabaone Thipe believes that Botswana will be well represented by Modewa who “shows a flair and confidence that we will need to keep the title in Botswana”.  What’s noteworthy is the decision by Nando’s Botswana to send both Modewa and the first runner up, Ogorogile Sekwaipe from Nando’s Francistown Galo to compete at the International finals in Dublin, Ireland.

Since 2012, 23 Countries including Malaysia, United States and Qatar have participated in this annual competition, with different countries playing host to the world’s best men and women behind the Nando’s grill. This event not only serves to reward the top griller in the country but, is one of the many ways in which continuous quality assurance is executed.

The 2019 leg of this year’s competition also saw a selection of the Top 18 Finalists personally deliver Flamed-Grilled meals to the Adopt a Person Home Based Care and Family Life Programme, a non-governmental organisation involved in the upliftment of underprivileged and often overlooked communities in Gaborone and surrounding villages. Project Manager, Ms Martha Rampa thanked Nando’s Botswana for extending their kindness to the organisation and ultimately assisting in creating “a better quality of life for young children” while also commenting that this “will certainly allow them to sow actions directly into children’s lives”.

“We are very pleased with the outcome of this year’s competition. It has been particularly heated as we watched Grillers’ from across the country embody this year’s theme, “Rise to the Grillccasion” and strive to meet, and possibly exceed, their Master Griller’s performance. We look forward to sending our best two grillers to Dublin, Ireland to go head to head with other grillers and bring back the title of Nando’s International Master Griller home,” said Nando’s General Manager, Mr Challenge Nhamoyebonde.
