Mascom derby thrills

Unfavorable weather conditions that befell the cosmopolitan town of Maun nearly ruined the most celebrated event in the town’s calendar of events this past Saturday.
The now rebranded ‘Mascom Derby’ was postponed to Sunday following heavy rainfall on Friday, a day before the horse race. The heavy showers left the horse track unfit for the event to go ahead as scheduled. But despite this slight change of events, the race was indeed held and the dusty tracks of Shashe horse race, which were now moist, much to the advantage of revelers were once more filled to capacity.
Local jockeys and their horses managed to make a major come back at the Mascom national derby after the race was for a while dominated by horses from neighbouring countries. Steven Moaner’s horse, named John Douglas and its Jockey Isaac Danny Simon from Charles Hill, clinched the first position in the race’s grand Final beating Back to Bowler and its Jockey William Afrikaner from Namibia.
Even in other races local horses and jockeys impressed. In the Thorough breed 1600m race Jough Douglas and its Jockey Isaac Danny Simon scooped position one followed by body builder and its Jockey   Debi Xwi from Jwaneng.  Jockey Hans Swartbooi and his horse Nababeep from Namibia came at little later at third position.
In thorough breed  1000 m  race, Debe Xwi FROM Jwaneng this time around  riding on  Double track  scooped position one, another local jockey from Charles Hill Piet Matthys and his horse Shinning Star took position two. Namibian Stanley Handricks riding on White Pegasus came at position three.
In the Tswana breed 800m race, a local jockey  from Maun Kori Cqase and his horse Jealos Cat  impressed at home by taking the first position. They were followed by Chris Hange and his horse Bin Laden took the second position.
Mascom Derby is famous for robust horse race competitions, Maun cuisine, music and cultural fashion extravaganza.
Tickets sold for P70 adults and P30 for children under the age of 12. In its maiden years, the race was held between Gaborone and Maun, until finally relocating to Maun. The 2015 race premiered the new name ‘Mascom Derby’, a change from the now famous Mascom National Derby. Participants from Lesotho and Namibia took part in this year’s event.
Prior to the fun filled event, Mascom donated P50 000 to the Thuso Rehabilitation centre which would be used to renovate their therapy department.
