The love and hate relationship between the MP for Francistown West Ignatius Moswaane and Speaker of the National Assembly Gladys Kokorwe entered parliament again for the second time since the opening of the 11th session of Parliament.

On Thursday the two were embroiled in another argument after Kokorwe accused Moswaane of speaking while she was still on the floor. Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) chief whip Liakat Kably said that they are going to confront the speaker on complaints raised by Moswaane. “Moswaane has registered a complaint with me that the Speaker of the National Assembly seems to have a vendetta against him and as such I will arrange a meeting to understand the issue,” said Kably in an interview.

The soft-spoken BDP chief whip said that it is not right for an MP to feel uncomfortable in Parliament or afraid to ask questions because of intimidation.

The clash between the two came after Moswaane wanted to stand on a point of order but Kokorwe accused him of undermining her by speaking while she was still on the floor. The militant Francistown West MP pleaded with the speaker that he didn’t interrupt her but Kokorwe stood her ground and ordered Moswaane to take his seat. This did not go down well with the voluble legislator who accused Kokorwe of hating him and making his life in parliament unbearable. “Madam Speaker does not like me at all,” fumed Moswaane after Kokorwe threatened to throw him out from parliament, prompting other Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) MPs to plead with Moswaane to let it go.

It was clear that Moswaane has garnered support from fellow MPs who felt that he has a point after he explained that he only rose on a point of order after the speaker had sat down. Moswaane, whose voice showed a frustrated person, threw hands up in the air and said, “I am suffering again,” as he sat down.

Early in February this year the two clashed again after Kokorwe accused Moswaane of always coming late to parliament and wanting to ask questions. At that time Moswaane told Kokorwe point blank that he knew that she hates him but the speaker laughed it off, saying she does not hate anyone. The maverick MP said that he only enjoys debate in Parliament when the deputy speaker Kagiso Molatlhegi is in charge.
