Botswana Public Employees Union (BOPEU), which has been at loggerheads with their federation, has taken resolution at their elective congress in Palapye to break ranks with Botswana Federation of Public Sector Union (BOFEPUSU).
Recently the union stopped their subscription to BOFEPUSU, citing lack of accountability and that books are not audited. On Wednesday, 226 delegates supported the motion to cut ties while 36 were against and 11 members were neutral.
BOPEU and BOFEPUSU have been at loggerheads regarding various issues amongst others forming alliance with Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), with BOPEU saying such a decision was never taken.
The decision by BOPEU delegates to leave BOFEPUSU will come as election boost for the incumbent president Andrew Motsamai who has had a rocky relationship with federation leadership. Motsamai is being challenged by the deputy President Sikalame Seitiso, who is enjoying the support of BOFEPUSU.
