Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) President Ian Khama has reportedly said that his party will bounce back to win the 2019 General Elections with a landslide, dismissing the 53 percent attained by the opposition in 2014 elections as protest votes by his party members. “We will prove this in the 2019 elections by winning with a landslide. We are going to hit them where it hurts the most in 2019,” Khama said this at the opening of the party Youth Wing council meeting in Mosu village. Khama enumerated the heavy recruitment drive that the party is undertaking, saying “I am pleased to recognise that our efforts at recruiting talented and active young people, led by the Party Chairman, have borne fruit.
So far, in excess of 400 new members were recruited in Gaborone South alone. More than 50 of the core activists of the Opposition have been recruited in Gaborone North. The ripple effect of these recruitments have been felt and are taking effect nationally. In Mogoditshane constituency, an elected councillor was recruited. With BMD, we paralysed the Youth Wing. With BCP we continue to harvest as those who have come are well known and many more are coming. What is gratifying about this is the fact that more than 90% of those recently recruited are young people.” He said the BDP views youth representation at all levels in the political set up as critical. “We are thus always encouraged by the figures, passion and enthusiasm of participation from the Youth in the electoral process. We therefore, always commend those who were able to make it in the elections process.
Over and above the endorsement of candidates by the voters in the last general elections, we took a deliberate decision to appoint nominated councillors to ensure an increase in youth representation at these levels. It is, therefore pleasing to note that we, in the BDP are making progressive strides in the area of youth representation within the leadership pipeline. It is through your sterling efforts and relentless drive to advance the Party’s agenda as the Youth that these young people found the opportunity to step up and be counted upon as your representatives. With your encouragement, solidarity, support and blessings you will give them the motivation and belief that indeed it is their time.”
