The decision by Botswana Development Corporation (BDC) to terminate their contract with Botalana Ventures, which has been running Talana farms, has brought misery to the residents of Bobirwa.
Responding to the Ministry of Trade and Industry budget request, the MP for Bobirwa who is also the Minister of Defence, Justice and Security, Shaw Kgathi said regretted that the Ministry through BDC has created over 600 job losses within the Bobirwa constituency. He pleaded with the ministry to bring the farm back to its original form.
BDC took the decision to part ways with Botalana Ventures after the farm failed to bring the desired results. Since then BDC were reluctant to put more capital in the project to increase production and even rescue the business from unforeseen fates like the floods which occasionally destroy crops and other produce.
Botalana Ventures once proposed to BDC to lease the farm to them to run it but the parastatal turned down the offer. Since he took over as BDC Managing Director, Bashi Gaetsaloe has shed off unprofitable investments and assets. The Minister of Trade and Industry Vincent Seretse – in his response – said that he will choose not to engage Kgathi on the Talana Farms issue.
