Botswana National Front Youth League (BNFYL) presidential candidate, Kago Mokotedi has differed with his party President Duma Boko on the issue of land redistribution. Launching his manifesto ahead of the BNFYL elective congress, Mokotedi said that as the youth league they want UDC government to confiscate land from the Catholic Church and Tati Company who own chunks a land in Gaborone and Francistown respectively. “We would like the constitution to be reviewed to ensure that land is legally taken from those who own a chunk of land and redistribute to citizens,” he said, adding that they will first persuade the Catholic Church and Tati company to cede the land at very low compensation failing which expropriation of the land will be the only alternative.
Ahead of the 2014 Botswana Congress Party (BCP) called for the reclaiming of the land especially the Kgale farm which is owned by the Catholic Church. BCP stance led to Bishop Valentine Seane calling on Catholics to be wary of politicians who are intent on expropriating the church’s land once voted into power. “Be careful against those kinds of politicians as they are talking about the land that is sustaining your church and yourselves. They are directly attacking you because that Kgale farm belongs to you,” said the prelate when addressing the church members last year.
