The Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism Tshekedi Khama has informed parliament that his ministry is responsible for undertaking both Makgadikgadi Epic and Race for Rhino (R4R) in Lekhubu Island events. According to Tshekedi, Makgakgadi Epic in Nata has gobbled P2 million and the Nata Conservation Trust was involved in the preparation of the event through Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO) facilitation. The Nata Conservation Trust, according to Tshekedi, was granted P77 000. “An economic survey report was undertaken for the Epic 2015 and estimated that the total revenue earned for the weekend of the event was estimated at P3 million,” he said in his answer to a question asked by the MP for Boteti East, Sethomo Lelatisitswe. As for the Race for Rhino (R4R), which was its first of a kind, Tshekedi revealed that P2.1 million was used to organise the event and Gain-o-ng Community Trust was given P82 000 as proceeds from the event. An economic survey assessment was not undertaken for R4R as it was the inaugural event, said Tshekedi adding that it will be undertaken in the second year of the event.
