South African mining magnate, Patrice Motsepe has lauded the government for managing to maintain an exceptional track record in governance and outstanding economy in Africa and the world over.

Motsepe was speaking at the Botswana Democratic Party fund raising dinner in Gaborone on Friday where the ruling party raised  more than a one million Pula.

Sources reveal that he had indicated that he would pledge a million Pula or more towards the fund raising which is geared at financing the oncoming general elections campaign among others.

Speaking at the fundraising dinner, Motsepe said it was worth noting that Botswana at the time of attaining independence was among the least developed countries not only in Africa but the world over but managed to supersede the situation and is now ranked among the most competitive economies in the world.

Motsepe cited the many international recognition and awards bestowed on Botswana by international bodies as some of the evidence that proved that Botswana was not only excelling in Africa but also had the potential to compete internationally.” Botswana can now hold its head up and compete not only in Africa  but elsewhere in the world without failure,” Motsepe said.

When focusing on the theme of the event; “Pre-Requisites of Successful Entrepreneur in an African environment; what can Botswana learn,” Motsepe implored Batswana to venture into business with the sole aim of furthering the national economy. This he said, at times required of business people to be selfless and work collectively towards attaining a single goal.” Batswana should come together and compete in the best interest of their conntryb he said.

Drawing from his own experiences  Motsepe said for one to excel in business there was a need for one to embrace available opportunities no matter how  small and risk.” The most successful entrepreneur  have an opportunistic mind, accept risk and potential failure and believes in the future of their business,” Motsepe said .

Motsepe also claimed to have taken a look at Botswana’s draft Citizen Economic Empowerment Policy and said compared to that of many countries in Africa, it was by far outstanding. “Compared to most countries, Botswana’s policy on economic empowerment is excellent,” he said.

The BDP raised a total of one million, P65 000 in pledges at the gala dinner and P90 000 in table seats, totaling to P1 090 065 of money.

Motsepe is the founder and Executive Chairman of African  Rainbow Minerals 9ARM). He founded Future Mining , which grew rapidly to become a successful contract mining  company. He then founded ARMgold in 1997, which listed on the JSE in 2002. ARM merged with Harmony in 2003  and  this ultimately led to the takeover Of Anglovaal Mining (Avmin) by African Rainbow Minerals (ARM).
