Khama issues election writ

The Independent Electoral Commission has informed the public that further to the dissolution of the 10th Parliament on 29th August 2014, President Ian Khama on the 10th of September, 2014, issued Writs of Elections in accordance with Section 34 of the Electoral Act, (Cap. 02.09) ordering the holding of the 2014 General Elections.

He directed that nominations for National Assembly elections for all the 57 Constituencies be held on the 25th September, 2014 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. He further directed that any polls which may become necessary shall be taken on the 24th day of October, 2014.

Similarly, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Lebonaamang Mokalake has issued Election Instruments in accordance with Section 154 of the Electoral Act directing that nominations for Local Government elections for all the 490 Polling Districts be held on the 25th September, 2014 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. He further directed that any polls which may become necessary shall be taken on the 24th day of October, 2014.

On a related matter, it “may be further noted that the Honourable Chief Justice has in terms of the Presidential Elections (Supplementary Provisions) Act (Cap. 02:01) determined that the nomination of candidates for the Office of President shall be handed to the returning officer at the High Court at Gaborone on Saturday 20th September, 2014 between the hours of 10 o’clock in the forenoon and 1 o’clock in the afternoon, or between 2 o’clock and 5 o’clock in the afternoon, said Seeletso, the IEC Secretary.
