Botswana's High Commissioner in Kenya, John Moreti, presented letters of credence to Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda in Kigali on the15th September, 2014. He becomes the first Botswana envoy to be accredited to the Republic of Rwanda but with residency in Nairobi.
During the meeting with President Kagame and Foreign Minister of Republic of Rwanda, the High Commissioner discussed the importance of deepening the excellent relations between the Governments and People of Botswana and Rwanda. The discussions highlighted the need for Botswana and Rwanda to promote the sharing of experiences and best practices which have resulted in the two countries being highly rated in areas such as good governance, institutional reforms and ease of doing business. The importance of the two governments working together to promote private sector relations with a view to stimulating investment and trade relations was also emphasised.
Botswana and Rwanda established diplomatic relations in 2004 and have enjoyed friendly relations characterized by among others closer collaboration at continental and international fora such as the African Union, the Commonwealth and the United Nations. Botswana was one of the countries that supported Rwanda's application to join the Commonwealth and it was admitted in November 2009.
