The political battle between the MP for Nata/Gweta Paulson Majaga and the Director at Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development, Lawrence Ookeditse, entered Parliament during a question-answer session on Thursday. Majaga has been crying foul that Ookeditse is trying to end his political career by campaigning to unseat him asked the relevant minister to brief Parliament about a certain officer who is a director in his ministry but is involved in politics. Initially the Assistant Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Kefentse Mzwinila tried to avoid answering the question, saying it was against some Standing Orders but the MP for Gaborone North quashed that claim, forcing him to give an answer. Mzwinila, who clearly knew the officer, said that he is not Director on Youth Programmes and Policies but rather a Policy Specialist (Youth) and that he is employed on contract basis. He denied that he was involved in politics. Majaga recently took his frustration to social media, accusing Ookeditse of using his position at the ministry of youth to campaign in his constituency. Early this year Majaga read political sabotage from an incident where he was nearly jailed for failure to appear in court over a stock theft case. “I was not surprised when they tried to ensure that they embarrass me by pushing for a 2006 case which was dismissed in 2014 to be reinstated,” said the livid and outspoken MP. He said his has been a dreadful career within the BDP as numerous efforts have been tried to discredit him in 2003 when he wanted to contest the parliamentary primary elections. The modus operandi he revealed is back again and sponsored by some in party leadership who have positioned their close allies to challenge him in 2018 primaries. “I am back in the black hole again. Stories have begun to appear about me and been portrayed as a hard-core criminal. They think that it would be funny to put the tragedy of my private life into a play,” said Majaga, who accused some top party leadership of being the architects of such stories.

He revealed that some of the people have already started campaigning and have raised concern with relevant structures to no avail. Another issue which he said is being used is that he has impregnated a school going girl, something which said has failed to dent his political career. “Some of these people have been handpicked and appointed directors in government ministries and are abusing their positions to campaign in the constituency,” hit out Majaga. Though he did not mention names, Ookeditse is one of the people who is said to be interested in challenging him. Ookeditse was part of the BDP campaigning Strategy in 2014 and a member of its Communications and International Relations committee before he was appointed Director in MYSC. In recent interviews, Ookeditse who is also running the Job Summit, refused to comment on allegations that he is in interested in contesting the elections. Another potential challenger to Majaga is former Botswana Congress Party (BCP) parliamentary candidate for the area Ditiro Majadibodu who lost by 2954 to Majaga’s 3424. In 2015 Majaga send panic waves to the ruling when he announced that he wants to quit the party as he is being frustrated. He would later somersault and write a letter denying that. Asked if he still have intentions of defecting, the voluble MP said that if his constituents give him a go ahead he will gladly do so. Majaga is currently in China on parliamentary business.
