Attorney Victor Ramalepa on Saturday came to the defence of Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) president Duma Boko, after the latter came under a barrage of criticism following reports that he represented Sidney Pilane in a legal matter. The criticism came just days before Boko and other UDC leaders were scheduled to meet Pilane's faction of the Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD) on Monday in an attempt to resolve the leadership impasse that has ravaged the party recently. Ramalepa said Ramalepa Attorneys is involved in a matter in which they had briefed Advocate Pilane. When the case continued, Advocate Pilane was not available and so they briefed Boko. He said Boko was neither appointed by nor was he acting for Pilane but a client through Ramalepa Attorneys. “ I'm surprised that this mere substitution of counsels has sparked so much hullabaloo when we have so much as a nation to contend with. Our firm, Ramalepa Attorneys is handling a private case with nothing to do with politics in which we had briefed Advocate Pilane. When the case continued Pilane was not available and so we briefed Duma Boko to act for our client but not for Mr Pilane. I do hope this clarifies issues," he said. The client is a faction of ZCC who are challenging the constitution of the church.
