MP Billy finds his match

The Francistown East MP, Buti Billy mentored and groomed him under the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) ticket. Now Itekeng ward councilor Lesego Kwambala is reportedly ready to blossom on his own. As he masterminded Phandu Skelemani’s downfall ahead of the 2014 General Elections, Billy worked in cohorts with the youthful Kwambala. Billy, a former Francistown mayor, played a significant role in ensuring that Kwambala got all the support from the people of Itekeng and the general BDP leadership that helped him to eventually triumph. Now battles lines have been drawn as sources say Kwambala will be contesting primary elections for Francistown East constituency against Billy. According to informed sources, Kwambala believes he has done his homework to win the hearts and minds of BDP members in Francistown East. “He wants to be the next MP for Francistown East,” said one BDP source, who claimed that Kwambala has already confided in him that he has made his mind to challenge Billy in the coming BDP primary elections. The ruling party has scheduled its primary elections in the incumbent constituencies for the end of 2018. “I am a sitting councilor. And I am currently busy with the local government mandate which was given to me by the people of Itekeng ward in 2014. The expectation is that I finish my mandate by 2019,” said Kwambala in an interview.

According to Kwambala, the intention of challenging his MP has not crossed his mind. He admitted that Billy played a significant role in ensuring that he becomes the politician he is today. “But to answer your question directly, let us cross the bridge when we get to the bridge. It sounds premature for me to talk about intentions of vying for the parliamentary seat in 2019,” said the 31-year-old politician from Tonota. As a sitting councilor, sources said, Kwambala is of the belief that he has matured enough to take the bull by its horns. Impeccable sources have hinted that Kwambala has been persuaded by certain young and old brigade in the constituency. “He is a young politician and has got a lot of potential of breathing a new lease of life in the National Assembly and Francistown East constituency,” said a source. Endless efforts to get a comment from Billy proved futile.
