Since he assumed power, President Mokgweetsi Masisi, has been globetrotting in what some said was to rebuild relationships with other countries which has collapsed over the years due to former President Ian Khama’s self-imposed exile from the international community.

During his 10years as Head of State, former President Khama made very few state visits and has never attended both African Union (AU) and United Nations Summits, saying it was waste of time. But his successor – who represented Khama at these international forums – sees things differently.

In his short time in office he has traversed the universe, having recently been to the China, United Kingdom, USA, and Switzerland and visited almost all SADC countries. This week he paid a state visit to Mozambique; his second trip to the country since assuming office.

Sources insist there is more to President Masisi’s high appetite for international travel – a habit that former President Festus Mogae was constantly attacked for as his globetrotting was seen as wastage.

Information gathered by this publication has revealed that the Masisi administration is working overtime in ensuring that intelligence attaches in critical areas that they are visiting are doing their work well.

With the new administration eager to reduce frustrations of potential investors, it is possible that in touching base with his international network of intelligence the President is not only introducing himself but is calling for increasing vigilance at country of source in clearing investors.

It is also highly possible that the new administration wants to be assured of the allegiance of its intelligence cadres.  Intelligence attachés’ duties include intelligence gathering for the country in areas where they are posted.

“You must be aware that he fired the Director General of Directorate of Intelligence and Security Services (DISS) and he might have lost a lot of intelligence information which is very vital,” revealed a national security expert.

The new Director General of DISS Peter Magosi has been accompanying President Masisi in all his international trips.

“Every country has intelligence attaches and Magosi had to see them and get briefing as well as appraising them,” a security agent confided.

There is fear within the intelligence community that some of the intelligence attachés who were appointed by the previous administration might be used to push agenda for their former boss.

In recent past there has been leaking of sensitive information including the names of agents, something that irked Magosi who said he will crack the whip.

“In most of his international trips President Masisi meets with the attaché and outlines his roadmap and seeking their loyalty.”

In the past it was alleged that some of the attaches who were close to DISS bosses were living luxurious lifestyles. One of them is codenamed ‘Kenya’ who was deployed in Mozambique and stayed in a beachfront villa.

Highly placed sources at DISS have confided the spy agency has taken decision to recall some of the attachés who are believed to be close to the former administration.

“Intelligence attachés deployed in Kenya, Mozambique, Zambia and Namibia are some of those who will be recalled back,” revealed the source. Efforts to get comment from DISS DG Magosi were futile as his phone was answered by one officer who said he cannot answer the office as he is doing some work in Selibe-Phikwe.
