Members of Parliament (MPs) from the opposition have failed the nation by failing to respond to the 2015/16 budget proposal, the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) President Dumelang Saleshando has said.
In an interview with The Patriot on Sunday, Saleshando said that failure to respond to the budget speech is an indictment on the opposition.
“This was a collective failure by the entire opposition and it shows that the 20 opposition seats don’t have an agenda for the economy,” he said, noting that this was the first budget speech after the 2014 General Elections.
Twenty seats of opposition cannot sustain a budget speech for three days this simply means the opposition cannot attend the debates while they have almost equal number as that of Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) back bench, said the former Gaborone Central MP.
Asked how he feels about the current opposition in parliament, Saleshando said that it is difficult to comment on what they have done as they have so far failed to articulate the alternative to the ruling party.
“Expectations are very high from the public looking at the performance of the opposition in the General Elections and if they don’t act fast Batswana will soon lose trust in us,” he said. [See the full interview on the coming edition of The Patriot on Sunday]
