Gaborone United this week unveiled their new players as move to demonstrate their seriousness in running for the league title this season. The team is also relocating from the BIAC grounds to their own grounds. The team’s new chairman Rapula Okaile said they are ready to steer the ship into a better direction. He said their number one priority is to make sure that their brand is taken care of and protected, where supporters are put into consideration and treated as superior.
Their new signings are Thato Ogopotse from BDF XI, goal keeper Michael Pepukani, Tshepo Maikano, Hendrick Moyo, Andrew Shadrack, Botlhe Rakaki, Katlego Koobake and central Ghanaian midfielder Godwin Bonsu who has been playing in Serbia. Bonsu was not among the players they were being paraded for the press. He is said to join the team soon. One of the surprises that make up the team was Mandla Mgadla, who has been withdrawn from the transfer list. Club Secretary General City Senne said their biggest mandate is to build GU. “We have supporters but most of them are not registered and they have not been coming to the games, so we want to rectify that,” he said.
He said they will not use Hendrick Moyo until everything is resolved with Orapa United – where he is being recruited - because they don’t want to be on the wrong side of the law.
Commenting on their goalkeeper coach Thabo Motang - one of the best in this country - Senne said they have not signed a contract with him yet after the one he had come to an end. He said they will definitely do so in due course as they need him. “We will make sure that we do all things that we are supposed to do, even in preparation for the CAF participation, we will do our best and do everything that is expected of us.” The new captain of the team Gaopatwe Seosenyeng said they are ready for this season but want everything to be finalised with other players who are joining them so they all start the season together. Their first game this season will be against Gilport Lions today (Sunday).
