It has become a norm that during independence holidays Botswana Softball Association (BSA) holds a tournament for its members. This year the tournament will be in Jwaneng where the competition will be hosted by Gatalamotho and Wells teams. Eliminations for the tournament will be under way in Francistown and Gaborone this weekend. Four teams from the two zones will join Gatalamotho and Wells in the finals. BSA spokesperson, Kelebogile Seitei, said holidays are usually the only time that they can get the teams to participate without having to worry about preparing for the league games. “We have a lot of teams and we don’t want to disturb them when the league is on so holidays are always the best times to meet,” she said. The independence cup was sponsored by Barloworld Botswana for 14 years.
Seitei regretted that had to part ways with Barloworld who cited problems this time around to withdraw from the sponsorship. This is the first time Komatsu has comes on board. She said they are hosting the tournament in Jwaneng because they have good facilities and good lighting. “We are even starting on the 29th of September at night because the facilities are that good,” she added. The total prize money is P93 500 with the prizes ranging from P20 000 to P5000 for those at the bottom.
