The 2015/16 Mascom Top 8 competition offers increased price money, with the ultimate winner pocketing a whopping P1.2 million. The competition starts in Orapa at the end of the month. All eyes will be on the defending champions Gaborone United to see if they will succeed in holding on to the cup and win it for the third time. However GU will face a strong challenge as they will take on arch rivals BDF XI in the opening game.
Standing at position seven in the league the Money Machine, as GU are affectionally known, have not had a good start to the season. On the other hand BDF XI will be looking to reclaim their lost fame in the season 5 of the Top 8 competition. They lost their cup last season when they were knocked off by Township Rollers in the semi-finals. The army side is also at the moment enjoying a very exiting form which put them at position 2 in the league.
Township Rollers, on the other hand, have a crème de la crème of Botswana football players. Popa continue to show their class in the league, and are sitting at the top of the log table. However Rollers are currently going through a rough patch in administration, a situation that is not good for players. Even though the players seem not to have been affected by this at the moment it is worrisome that this could soon get down to them if the situation is not arrested soon.
Should this be the case the Top 8 ambitions could vanish and they may lose out on the money. Nonetheless in normal circumstances Rollers who are starting to find their rhythm may easily win the title if they manage to go through Police XI. Police XI are the most improved team in the league this season and their intentions are very Former player and now Coach Maitumelo Lotlaamoreng appears to have inspired the team into being combative and competitive.
The Mascom Top 8 newbies Orapa United are capable of causing upsets to the big teams. The Ostriches have already proved their strength by finishing 2nd in the league. They take on the ailing Extension Gunners in their opening game and it could go either way particularly after the latter recruited their former coach Daniel Chicco Nare to salvage their dwindling performance.
