It has been confirmed, Gaborone United and Coach Rahman Gumbo have finally parted ways. This comes after numerous speculations that the two will part ways because of the team’s poor performance.
GU spokesperson Mike Mafutlhe confirmed in an interview that the two parted ways on Thursday evening. “It is true Gumbo is no longer GU coach. The two (Gumbo and GU management) amicably agreed to part ways in a meeting they held on Thursday,” revealed Mafutlhe.
He advanced that Gumbo’s departure was influenced by the continued bad performance of the team. Moyagoleele is currently sitting at position eight in the log having won only four games from the 11 they played. Gumbo’s departure followed the 0-4 thrashing by Nico United last weekend.
Mafutlhe said the Thursday meeting was not the first as the management also held meetings with Gumbo concerning the performance of the team. “Every Monday management meets with the technical team over the continued hot and cold performance,” he said.
With Gumbo now out of the picture some now believe that the technical director Dragojlo Stanojlovic will take up the position of head coach. Speculations have been rife that the Serbian was roped into the position of technical director to place him in the right position to take over the coaching job. Mafutlhe confirmed that Stanojlovi has since been appointed care taker coach. “In the meantime Drago will be in charge of the team as a care taker coach,” said Mafutlhe.
However there are speculations that the club is eyeing Oris Radipotsane to replace Gumbo. Radipotsane, who is Zebras assistant coach, is without a team following his departure from Jwaneng Galaxy. He was also dismissed following a string of poor performance by the club.
Mafutlhe out rightly dismissed the speculations as untrue. “This is news to me and I am only starting to hear them from you,” he explained. Mafutlhe went on to say they have not yet met with any coach about the job. He further said “we have not even advertised it yet” to quash the speculations. “As far as I know Drago will be at the helm of the club in the meantime as we will be looking for Gumbo’s replacement,” said Mafutlhe.
Efforts to reach Gumbo and Radipotsane were unsuccessful as their phones were off air.
