Notwane Football Club’s long awaited judgement for taking football matters to court has finally been delivered. The National Disciplinary Hearing Committee on Thursday met and resolved that Notwane be fined P4000 for their action.
Notwane followers and other football lovers in the country have been waiting impatiently for the judgement after the team was found guilty of taking football matters to the court of law. The matter has been dragging for a long time as the case has been postponed on numerous occasions.
When delivering the judgement on Thursday the National Disciplinary Hearing Committee also advised that Notwane’s case be listened to by Botswana Football Association (BFA) within 14 days. The matter emanated after Notwane took to court to have their playoff game against FC Satmos to be postponed so that BFA could listen to their plea.
Notwane was querying why the complaint they lodged against Sankoyo Bush Bucks for using a defaulter during their game on March 21, 2015 in Maun have not been addressed. The team management felt that their complaint should have been addressed before a decision to play Satmos was made hence resorting to go to court.
Following the judgement it is still unclear what the team will do from here. Notwane’s spokesperson Podi Mooki could not comment on the matter saying he is currently on break from the team. Mooki referred this publication to the chairman Arnold Somolekae whose phone rang unanswered.
Botswana Premier league chief prosecutor Tshiamo Rantao confirmed the judgment but could not explain it further saying he was not present when it was delivered. Rantao said he is still waiting for the written judgement and the reasons that led to the P4000 fine.
Notwane is not the first team to be fined for taking football matters to court as BDF XI had also suffered the same fate. The army side was docked 6 points during the 2013/2014 season that cost them the league championship.  Notwane’s fine has caused mixed feeling from the football fraternity. Some are questioning why Notwane was fined money not points deduction like it was done with BDF XI while others feel the fine is relevant to Notwane’s situation.
