Lady Khama Charitable Trust will host their first event of the year – the Lady Khama Run 21 – on March 6. Programme Director at Lady Khama Charitable Trust Rebecca Binns said since the Trust was set up in 2002 they have always had fund raising initiatives every year. Currently they have four annual events - the Run 21; the diamond derby in May; the family fun day in August and the golf day at the end of the year. She said all these cater for different people who wish to contribute in a way. She said all their events have a family element in them. According to Binns, the nice thing about the Run 21 is that it is growing every year. The first one in 2013 had 200 runners; in 2014, some 498 runners and last year 1007 runners.
She said this year they expect 1500-2000 runners. They have a close relationship with the Diacore Marathon, where they are also the beneficiaries to the event and those training for the Diacore marathon always use the Run 21 to prepare themselves. “We have just been confirmed by Gaborone Game Reserve to pass through them but only for the 21km runners only,” she said. She added that the reason for that is because 21 km runners are not many. The bulk is in the 10km event. The event will take place at Ditshupo hall, which are their sponsors and have given them the venue for four days including security and car parking. Sefalana gave goodie bags to the first 800 people to register for the marathon.
Binns said they will be selling their t-shirts. Even though they are not registered with Botswana National Sports Commission (BNSC) because they are a charity event, the BNSC has advised them on the route and the measures that they should put in place. Med Rescue is their emergency partner while Pinnacle Express will be assisting with the setup. They have about 100 volunteers who will be helping them. The 5km ticket is P50; 10km is P100 while 21km is P150. She said that the registration will be closed on February 21 while the registration numbers are to be picked on March 4-5 at the Pavilion restaurant. The registration can either be done online or at their offices. Other sponsors are Unispan and O3. Binns said President Ian Khama has confirmed his attendance for the prize giving ceremony.
