Registration for the biggest marathon in the country, Diacore Marathon, has started, albeit online following a decision by organisers to scrap manual entries. Registration will be closing at the beginning of October other than in the past years where registration always went on until the year of the race.
Spokesman for the race, Thabo Makgato, said this is a new development that they have introduced because they want to give the participating professional athletes enough time to train for the race.
“Registrations for the race have opened on the 1st of August until October 3rd. This year we are not doing any manual registrations. All registrations will be done online in our website www.diacoregaboronemarathon.com. The race will be held on the 22nd of March next year and people who want to be part of the event should register now because after October we will not be taking in any more people,” Makgato said.
On whether this will not sideline many Batswana who would want to be part of the race but without accounts to pay online and those who do not have access to internet, Makgato said they have considered this as an option after seeing an influx of people who registered online in the past year. He said Botswana has joined the hi-tech highway and believe more people will register using this mode to exceed the 4000 entrants that registered last year.
Makgato said for those who would not be able to pay online, they can pay at Stanbic banks after registering online. Diacore aims to go up to 7500 entrants this year.
He stated that the venue of the race is still Grand Palm. Last week the organisers donated part of the proceeds from the race to 22 charity organisations. Among beneficiaries were Bana Ba Metsi, BOSASNET, Camphill, Pudulogolong Rehabilitation Centre, Lifeline, Ducere Foundation and Sekolo Sa Anne-Stine. The total amount donated this year is P615 000 as compared to the P450 000 last year.
“The reason why we have many charity organisations that we gave to is because this year each sponsor was choosing the charity organisation that they want to give to, and that is the reason why we have many beneficiaries and we want to do the same thing for this next race.”
Makgato said they have also introduced what they call Pro pack system for the next race, which is a package for professionals. On whether they have made any further changes and improvements regarding the race, he said that apart from the online registration they would not have many things changed because they are happy with the model that they use.
