Footballers Union Botswana (FUB) held its first annual awards for the best 11 players in the 2015/16 football season. FUB Honorary President Diphetogo Selolwane expressed his excitement to see that the place was filled with both young and old former football players that Batswana adored. “For the first time players and ex-players are recognised for the role they play in football. We are stakeholders in football and we celebrate all the hard work and achievements,” he said. He added that it is important that players have a platform so that football can be built in Botswana. He said he wished he had the opportunity to be voted by other players as the best because that is very dear.
When explaining the criteria that they used FUB Secretary General Kgosana Masaseng said that they went to all the 16 teams for players to select their best goalkeeper, best four defenders, three midfielders and three strikers. The team is made up of Mosimanegape Robert, Tshepo Motlhabankwe, Simisane Mathumo, Thabang Mosigi, Olekantse Mambo, Lawrence Majawa, Maano Ditshupo, Segolame Boy, Ronald Chikomo, Tendai Nyumasi and Thabang Sesinyi. Orapa United and Township Rollers dominated, with Olekantse Mambo walking away with the player of the season crown and P10 000 from All Kasi. All those in the team received P2000 from BBS, which kept the money as savings for the players.
The local clothing line All Kasi partnered with Footballers Union Botswana to host the awards. One of the All Kasi Directors Ludo Kemoeng said they know that they are Botswana’s champion clothing because of the quality that they are able to produce; and they always support anything that is local. Head of FUB Technical Committee Sexton Kowa said it was great to see the eleven players getting praises from their fellow players. “It also means everything to be given an award by someone who has taken part in what you do and understands that better,” he said.
