Following a successful tournament in 2015, the famous Gaborone International Open Chess championship is here again. The tournament that attracts players from across Southern Africa will be held over the weekend at Oasis Motel. This year Botswana Chess Federation (BCF) says it is expecting over 150 players to take part. Local chess players will be looking to defend their titles this weekend against Africa’s best. Both the Open and Ladies sections titles were won by Fide Master Thato Olebile and Woman Grandmaster Tuduesto Sabure. The Gaborone International Open Chess Championship 2016 is sponsored by Kalahari Associates Botswana to the tune of P26 000. BCF Director of Public Relations Keenese Katisenge said the tournament has seen a steady growth over the years and has been integral in the development of young players. Over the years the competition has grown in leaps and bounds to attract players from as far as Malawi, Zimbabwe, Zambia and other Southern African countries. Katisenge said this gives younger players the opportunity to test their strength against tougher players from the region. These championships are also expected to be used as a preparatory stage for the national team that is preparing for the Chess Olympiad this September in Azerbaijan, Baku. Winners of the open section will pocket P4000 while the champion of the ladies section gets P300.
