Information coming from within the Gaborone United (GU) camp is that the club’s head Coach Rodolfo Zapata might not come back to the team for the coming season. Sources close to the club revealed that this is due to the financial woes that the club is faced with at the moment. Zapata went back to his native country of Argentina at the end of the 2015/2016 beMOBILE Premier leagues season and is yet to return. The departure of GU former investor Nicholas Zakhem is believed to have taken a toll on the team’s financials. The source said the finances have affected the operations at the club and the coach has been told to wait until the situation is resolved.
“It is still difficult at the club because of finances,” revealed the source. Despite heightened talks that the coach might not come back the source said there is hope as the management is working round the clock to bring back the coach. Zapata has signed a two year deal with GU and is left with another season on his contract. The finance constraints are said to be so severe at the club and not have only affected the coach. To this point Gaborone United has not signed any new player and source revealed that this is due to the financials at the club. Nonetheless there seems to be hope as the club is said to be currently in talks with their former investor to come to the rescue.
The model of the help is said to be trying to bring back Zakhem as a sponsor than an investor he used to be. Efforts to reach the club management were futile as Rapula Okaile’s mobile phone was not reachable. GU’s secretary general City Senne also could not be reached as his phone rang but was dropped on several occasions. However, Zakhem confirmed in an email that he has been in talks with the team. Zakhem further revealed that he pledged P1 Million in form of sponsorship for the team. However he clearly mentioned that this will be an arrangement for the coming season only. Zakhem further put to rest speculations that he will be coming back to run the team. “I further confirm that I will not be involved in any way or form in the running of the team,” he explained.
